“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead . . .”

                                                                                    Philippians 3:13

Willie Carson, the famous British jockey, was racing one day at Pontefract, a historic town in Yorkshire, England.

He was happily leading as the urged his horse on, holding tight to the rails. A furlong and a half from home he thought he heard something at his back and, glancing round, he saw the shadow of a horse coming up behind. Determined that he would not be beaten, he spurred his horse on and was first at the finish line.

It was only then that he looked round and saw that the nearest horse was fifteen lengths behind. He had been racing his own shadow for the last part of the race.

Sometimes we are haunted by the memory of a mistake or a regret from our past. It’s there as if there is a shadow looming over us, preventing us from enjoying the present moment.

God has forgiven our past. It is time for us to let go of it as well and live for a new day and a new purpose.

Father, help us to leave yesterday behind and move toward You and Your Glory all the days of our lives. In Jesus’ name, AMEN
